Design and Performance of Passive Control System for Gas-Liquid Cylindrical Cyclone Separators by Ram Mohan, Shoubo Wang, & Ovadia Shoham, The University of Tulsa and Gene Kouba, Chevron Petroleum Technology Company Abstract: The performance of Gas Liquid Cylindrical Cyclone (GLCC) separators can be improved by reducing or eliminating liquid carry-over into the gas stream or gas carry-under through the liquid stream, utilizing a suitable liquid level control. In this study, a new passive control system has been developed for the GLCC, in which the control is achieved by utilizing only the liquid flow energy. A passive control system is highly desirable for remote, unmanned locations operated with no external power source. Salient features of this design are presented here. Detailed experimental and modeling studies have been conducted to evaluate the improvement in the GLCC operational envelope for liquid carry-over with the passive control system. The results demonstrate that a passive control system is feasible for operation in normal slug flow conditions. The advantage of the dual inlet configuration of the GLCC is quantified for comparative evaluation of the passive control system. The results of this study could form the basis for future development of active control systems using a classical control approach.

Modeling and Hybrid Pareto Optimization of Cyclone Separators Using Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)

In present study, a three-step multi-objective optimization algorithm of cyclone separators is catered for the design objectives. First, the pressure drop (Dp) and collection efficiency (h) in a set of cyclone separators are numerically evaluated. Secondly, two meta models based on the evolved Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) type neural networks are regarded to model the Dp and h as the re...

A REVIEW OF GAS-LIQUID CYLINDRICAL CYCLONE (GLCC) TECHNOLOGY by G. E. Kouba

Economic pressures continue to force the petroleum industry to seek less expensive alternatives to conventional gravity based separation. The gas-liquid cylindrical cyclone (GLCC) is a simple, compact, low-cost separator that can provide an economically attractive alternative to conventional separators over a wide range of applications. Although cyclones have long been used for liquid/liquid, s...

Simulation of Free Interface Shape and Complex Two-phase Flow Behavior in a Gas-liquid Cylindrical Cyclone Separator

The Gas Liquid Cylindrical Cyclone (GLCC) separator is an attractive compact separator alternative to the conventional vessel-type two-phase flow separator. Thus, it is important to develop predictive tools for design and to be able to improve the technology of the GLCC. Previous studies on the GLCC have focused on mechanistic models capable of predicting the operational envelope for liquid car...

The Research On The Performance Of Oil-gas Cyclone Separators In Oil Injected Compressor Systems With Considering The Collision And Breakup Of Oil Droplets

The high-speed swirling flow field in the cyclone oil-gas separator will cause the breakup of oil droplets, thus reducing the separation efficiency. In this paper, the performance of an oil-gas cyclone separator was investigated through both numerical simulations and experiments with considering the breakup of oil droplets in oil-gas cyclone separators. The gas flow field was simulated using th...
